The
article “Subtext App Helps Meet Common Core State Standards” explains how an
app called “Subtext” is very beneficial for students to help meet the Common
Core requirements of to read and understand nonfiction and informational texts
in all subjects. This app supports
those students who don’t prefer or rarely take action in discussion during
class. The app obtains free informational texts for all grade levels and
subjects online that the teachers may use for their students. How this app
helps students reading and participating is by providing annotations that the
teacher can write comprehension questions or a discussion. The students are
able to answer questions, discuss ideas, and analyze the text through
collaboration using the app. The app also provides the teacher to embed videos
or audios next to the text. This helps students meet the Common Core
requirement of comparing informational text with a video/audio source. Lastly,
the teacher can assign a writing prompt activity on the app as well that
students must answer to show they know and understand the material.
As
a future teacher, educating and preparing your students for the Common Core
state requirements are very important for the success of the student and
teacher. As liberal studies major
but a math minor, literature isn’t my strongest suit. With the help of this
app, my students and I can analyze and discuss together at our pace and in our
environment. In a classroom today, commonly the same 2-4 students answer
literature discussions and the others are too shy, not listening, or take
longer to answer the question. With the help of this app, we can tackle the
weaknesses and make them strengths.
This
article clearly represents the ISTE standard number 2 for students. The
standard is on Communication and Collaboration and requires students to “use
digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual’s learning and contribute to the
learning of others.” Teachers and students can really benefit from the Subtext
App because it helps the reading experience and is a helpful solution to
improve literacy in all subjects.
